Backend Engineer – Java (Senior & Principal roles available)
📍London (Hybrid)
Unfortunately, no visa sponsorship offered

This is Java engineering with real stakes. Our client, a leading technology consultancy embedded within major financial institutions, is growing its backend team. Senior and Principal Engineers wanted to build cloud-native platforms behind a digital banking product used by millions of customers.

Whether you're looking to deepen your technical craft or step into architectural leadership, this is a chance to work on high-impact, business-critical platforms at scale.

What you'll be doing

  • Designing and building microservices-based applications using Java 11/17+ and Spring Boot

  • Delivering enterprise-ready cloud solutions on AWS

  • Building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines with secure, scalable deployments

  • Writing strong test coverage and championing quality-driven development

  • Collaborating in agile teams, contributing to architecture and design decisions

  • (Principal level) Leading technical direction, mentoring engineers, and owning solution design across squads

What you'll bring

  • Expert-level Java (11, 17, 21+) and Spring Boot

  • Strong AWS experience - hands-on deployment of enterprise-grade systems

  • Experience with microservices, event-driven architecture, and cloud-native design

  • Kafka, Java Streaming, and confidence across SQL/NoSQL

  • Familiarity with Infrastructure as Code (CloudFormation or similar) and distributed systems troubleshooting

  • Fintech or product-company background strongly preferred

  • Strong stakeholder skills and a genuine go-getter mindset - this is a high-visibility platform, not a place to blend into the background

Nice to have

  • GitLab CI/CD and Cucumber/BDD experience

  • AWS Solutions Architect certification

  • CQRS knowledge and performance testing experience

  • A genuine interest in emerging cloud tech and AI-assisted development

A competitive, people-first package: discretionary bonus, private health and life insurance, 5 weeks' annual leave (plus buy/sell), 40+ hours of training a year, a dedicated business coach from day one, and a genuinely flexible, non-hierarchical culture.

Research indicates that men will apply to a role when they only meet 50-60% of the descriptions, however, when looking at women and other minority groups, they can look for up to a 99% match in order to apply to a role.
